Initial Point is located about 9 miles south of Kuna in southwest Idaho. Established in 1867, a US Geological Survey marker on the top of this lone lava butte is the starting survey point for the entire State of Idaho. The Owyhee Mountains are seen to the southwest and the Boise Front to the northeast. Directly north is Squaw Butte.
Initial Point sits on top of a 126 foot high butte that is the remains of a volcanic cinder cone the top having an elevation of 3026 feet.
The town of Meridian, Idaho directly to the north was founded on the North-South meridian line, thus the city's name.
