The original location of the town which was founded in the 1870s was in the valley which is now inundated by Lake Hume since the Hume Weir was built in the 1950s. The shallow lake with a maximum depth of about 40 metres has a surface area of 20,091 hectares and holds a maximum of 3,005,000 megalitres. When this photo was taken early 2012 the lake was approximately 81% full.

Australia is the driest inhabited continent and Victoria is no exception although the state capital Melbourne has the reputation to have 4 seasons in one day. Victoria is located in the southeast of mainland Australia and includes the most southern point on mainland Australia at Wilsons Promontory National Park.
