Marvao, Chapel of Calvario, aerial view, Portugal
Extremadura

Built in the lower part of the village, it is a building with a polygonal plan, in the traditional construction of the temples of this invocation, with a dome, housing the images of the Virgin and St. John. Work from the 19th century, reflects the popular piety of the "Passos" that expanded this century, throughout the Alentejo. The reference of these patrimonial values of religious architecture makes it possible to make the path to the objective that moves us, in its global sense and singularity, more accessible, and if they do not lose themselves in the indistinct sum, so often, of forgetfulness and greatness. This summary "exhibition" of religious architecture emphasizes the truth that religious buildings "honor" space and, on the whole, reinforce the "living scene" of this Earth. On the other hand, they mark, in this historical and current community, a whole process of "spontaneous" and conscious development, of known artistic, religious value, "monumental" ensemble that affirms the harmony of the variety, articulating military, civil and religious buildings, in a unique natural environment.
