Metla House
Joensuu

Metla House in Joensuu was completed in 2004. It is Finland's first large three-floor office building to be built from wood and to have a wooden frame. The building was created for the Finnish Forest Research Institute which is called "Metla" (Metsäntutkimuslaitos). From the beginning of 2015 Metla has been part of the Natural Resources Institute Finland which is called "Luke" (Luonnonvarakeskus).

When Metla House was constracted, both new and traditional wood construction solutions were involved. Before it was built, there was an architectural competition that was won by architect's office SARC Oy. Antti-Matti Siikala acted as a chief architect. Almost all of Finland's 24 native wood species were used in the structure and interior decoration of Metla House.

Metla House has become an important national and international reference site for wood construction. It has also received several awards, such as Building Project of the Year, Senate Properties 2004; Wood Award 2005, Puuinformaatio Oy; and Lighting Project of the Year 2005.
