新潟と群馬の県境にある白砂山(2143m)へ10月8日に行ってきた。野反湖キャンプ場近くの登山口から2時間半登って堂岩山の山頂を越えると白砂山が現れる。斜面の所々に紅葉した潅木が見られる。堂岩山から見晴らしの良い稜線上の登山道を一時間程歩くと白砂山の山頂に到着する。
山頂からは東に谷川連峰、南には榛名山、西には草津・志賀が見えその向こうには北アルプスも見える。このパノラマでは北側の眺望は無いが、少し移動すると佐武流山や苗場山が見られ、こちらも良い眺めだ。
帰りは少し遠回りをして堂岩山から八間山を経由して戻ったが、八間山までのルートも左側の眺望が良く楽しめた。
