The Pentagon 911 Memorial was completed in 2008 and honors the 184 people killed in the building and on American Airlines Flight 77. Each of the 184 benches are engraved with the name of a victim and has a small illuminated reflecting pool below.
The benches face in two directions 59 of the benches, passengers, face one direction and the additional 125 face the other. When you read the name engraved on the bench if you back is to the Pentagon it is a passenger. If you are facing the Pentagon and reading the name that person was in the Pentagon.
You may find a plaque in the pool below a bench and that is to denote that the bench is that of a family member that perished also. You’ll find that there is staff on site to give assistance. However, there is a cell phone guided tour that you can listen too at 202-741-1004.
The Pentagon 911 Memorial is located just outside the Pentagon next to the Pentagon south parking lot. But don’t expect to park right next to the memorial unless you have handicapped privileges you can stop and drop off but no regular parking right next to the memorial. Check the websites for parking locations.
