Plaza de San German
Puerto Rico

The Iglesia San Germán de Auxerre, also known as the Church of Saint Germanus of Auxerre, is a historic Roman Catholic parish church located in San Germán, Puerto Rico. It overlooks the main plaza of the town. The Spanish settlers founded the San Germán parish in 1510 and constructed the first permanent church in 1688. Over the years, the church underwent repairs and reconstructions due to earthquake damage. Notably, between 1717 and 1739, extensive restoration work took place. In the early 20th century, the tower was rebuilt following the 1918 earthquake.

The interior of the Church of San Germán is lavishly decorated. Its trompe-l’œil painting imitates wood coffers on the ceiling, creating a visually stunning effect. The vault and arches are also adorned in the same trompe-l’œil style. Within the church, you’ll find the 1869 marble altar and ten other smaller secondary marble altars from the 19th century. Additionally, a collection of 17th-century metalwork, 18th-century wooden carvings, and a painting by José Campeche are preserved in the choir loft.
