The wind whips across the wide area of sand, waves tumble thick and fast in the ice cold Atlantic water and sparse rock hills rise up in the background - on the huge beach of Praia do Amado nature shows its rugged side. And surfers in particular appreciate this, because both pros and beginners find the conditions here ideal for surfing.

The vast beach of Praia do Amado spreads out between shimmering red cliffs and almost black slate rock faces on the west coast of the Algarve. It is situated around 40 kilometres from Lagos and is easy to reach by car. You can park your car in a large car park right by the beach.

Two surf schools provide surfing gear and offer various courses aimed at beginners and pros, adults and children. Surfers have a large impact on the beach all year round. Only a few people come here purely to relax and sunbathe. From June to September lifeguards ensure safety and you can hire sun loungers that are even fitted with a windbreak. In the winter months beginner surfers should avoid this beach because the strength of the wind and the water is difficult for novices to master.

Above the beach you will find a few small shacks serving drinks and snacks. From the terraces and the nearby viewpoints you have spectacular views of the rugged natural scenery.
