Preveli Monastery Monument (2), Rethymno, Crete, Greece
Greece

Preveli Monastery, located on the southern coast of Crete near the Libyan Sea, is one of the island's most treasured religious and historical sites. Dating back to the Middle Ages, this monastery complex is nestled in the rugged mountains and surrounded by lush vegetation, offering stunning views over the sea. Divided into the Lower (Kato) and Upper (Pisso) Monasteries, Preveli is renowned for its role in Crete's resistance movements, especially during the Ottoman and World War II eras, when it served as a sanctuary and aid center for rebels and Allied soldiers.

The main monastery, dedicated to St. John the Theologian, showcases a blend of Byzantine and Venetian architectural styles, with a beautiful courtyard, arched passageways, and centuries-old frescoes. The peaceful atmosphere and scenic surroundings invite visitors to reflect and explore, while the museum on-site houses sacred relics, rare manuscripts, and artifacts that reveal Crete's rich spiritual heritage. Near the monastery is the iconic Preveli Beach, where the Kourtaliotis River meets the sea, forming a stunning palm-lined lagoon that adds to the area’s allure.
