Pulpit Lake, Sawtooth National Wilderness, Idaho, USA
Sawtooth National Wilderness

Pulpit Lake is located on the northern end of the Sawtooth National Wilderness Area, Custer County, Idaho, USA.  The lake sits at 8,575 feet (2,614m) above sea-level and is a 4.5 mile (7.2km) hike from the nearest trailhead, which is Stanley Lake Campground.  Stanley Lake Campground is 8 miles (by road) from the town of Stanley, Idaho.  The first 3 of the 4.5 hiking miles are on a well maintained hiking trail.  The total elevation change of the hike is 2,050 feet (625m).  The last trail-less mile and a half of the hike is not difficult but accounts for 800 feet (244m) of the total ascent.

This image was taken on October 18, 2011 from the south shoreline.  Pulpit Lake is approximately 475 feet (145m) long and 210 feet (64m) wide and has a shoreline distance of about 1,440 feet (439m).  The lake is surrounded by 4 mountain peaks above 9,100 feet (2,774m) high, including McGown Peak at 9,860 feet (3,005m).

Harsh winters keep Pulpit Lake ice and snow covered over half the year.  The best time for visiting in summer weather is August through October.
