View from the east summit of Red Butte in the Red Buttes Wilderness near Seiad Valley, California. The Red Buttes owe their red color due to the uncommon mineral peridotite. Here there is a rock shelter bivouac at the top. From here, one can see Mt. Shasta, Mt. McLoughlin, Mt. Eddy, Preston Peak, Kangaroo Mountain (behind the west summit), nearby Grayback Mountain, & the Siskiyou Crest. Views of the Klamath Mountains in both California & Oregon as well as part of Applegate Lake to the north. Several high small lakes, which are uncommon in the Siskiyou Mountains, are visible towards the base. Look on the ridge to the south to see a white exposed layer of marble amidst the heavy lingering snowpack. Like many of the nearby summits, within the cracks were at least 30,000 ladybugs hovering in massive clusters. The west summit is close nearby, separated by a deep abyss.
