Richmond Gaol
Tasmania

The stark courtyard of the Richmond Gaol (jail) gives only a hint of what life was like for Tasmanian prisoners in early colonial days. Built by convict labor between 1825 and 1827 the sandstone structure included a Gaoler's house, chain gang holding room, privy, flogging yard, male's and female's solitary confinement cells, cookhouse and other facilities.

Now a museum and tourist attraction, the Richmond Goal is well preserved with displays of prison artifacts and documents. It is the oldest surviving prison in Australia. It was used as a jail until 1928.
