Orway farm has installed a state of the art milking system in the dairy. The robotic equipment first cleans the udders and then uses a laser to guide the milking equipment into place. Yields for each animal are data-logged, and any abnormalities in the milk are picked up instantly. Each animal wears a tag that identifies it to the system. The cows receive the correct amount of feed automatically and the tag prevents them from entering the milking cycle at the wrong time. The cows love the system as it means they are free to wander in the adjacent fields, but they can be milked as many times as they want in a day. They even have an automated back scratcher! The equipment frees the farmer from the drudgery of twice a day milking, and actually improves milk production from the whole herd, while tracking the detailed information about the yield from each cow.
