The ruins of Dunbrody Abbey, County Wexford
Ireland

The ruins of Dunbrody Abbey are located on the banks of the Campile River in County Wexford. The Norman monastery was founded around 1170, with construction completed in 1220.  It is built to a typical Cistercian design, with a large church with a floor plan in the shape of a cross, next to a cloister and surrounded by other domestic buildings.

Oddly, its monks were often in conflict with neighbours from the nearby Tinturn Abbey, with the abbot of Dunbrody, and some of his monks, charged with false imprisonment and horse theft.

The once prosperous abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. It was soon ransacked and left in ruins.
