Ampara Beach, Sri Lanka

The coastline on the eastern side of Ampara District, took the full force of the tsunami 26th December 2004. This image was taken 3 years after the event. Most of the debris from the tsunami had been removed, leaving the empty shells of houses on the beach. UNEP were involved in the clean-up of asbestos which covered the beach and surrounding fields. This image was taken for The United Nations Environment Programme.
