This 300' aerial view overlooks the destruction of the hamlet of Canyondam, California about nine months since the Dixie Fire ripped through on August 6, 2021. The fire has burned 963,309 acres & is the single largest wildfire in recorded California history & most expensive ever at $637.4 million; it is the second largest fire in the state after the August Complex which occurred during the summer of 2020. Canyondam had a population of 30 as of 2020 & had a 5.7 magnitude earthquake that struck on May 23, 2013, the epicenter 1.6 miles from town. Nearly 95% of the structures in town were destroyed - much cleanup has already taken place leaving only foundation pads. According to Cal Fire, the Dixie Fire was started on July 13, 2021 in the Feather River Canyon near Cresta Dam by a tree contacting a PG&E distribution line. Lake Almanor & Lassen Peak are visible in the distant northwest.
