Diocaesareia Uzuncaburc Silifke Vr Mersin 05e

It is located within the borders of Uzuncaburç Neighborhood, 30 km to Silifke District, Mersin. The archeological site in Uzuncaburç, which was in the dominating scope of Olba Teritorrium - located 4 km to the east of the modern settlement of Uzuncaburç -during the Hellenistic Period, got its independence from Olba in 72, during the rule of Emperor Vespesianus in the Roman Period, and became an autonomous city minting its own coins by the name of Diocaesareia (The city of God-Emperor). Turks capturing the region after the Byzantine Period, renamed the city making use of the symbol of the city, the high bastion (Hellenistic tower structure), and called it “Uzuncaburç” (literally: high tower). Important remains of the site include the Colonnaded Street, Ceremony Gate, Temple of Zeus, Triumphal Arch, Temple of Tyche, Hellenistic Monumental Tomb, Hellenistic Tower and the necropolis area.
