Donuktas Tarsus Vr Mersin 38f
Turkey
It is located close to Tarsus State Hospital, in the 3712th street in Tekke Neighborhood of Tarsus District, Mersin. Middle Age traveller V. Longlais identified this place as the grave of the Assyrian King Sardanapal. The excavations started by the French Consul Ch. Texier and a finger that is supposed to belong a vey huge statue was found during the study. Excavations revealed a monumental building as well. The building was connected with a massive square vaulted arch in a rectangular area extending northeast-southwest direction. It was found out that the structure stood on a 20-stair base. On the outside, the structure was 98 m long, 98 m wide; the walls were 8 m high and diameter of the walls was 6. 50 m. It is also understood that the main space did not have a roof on top of it. Because of several marble cuneiforms unearthed during excavations, it is thought that the external face of the temple was covered with marble cuneiforms. It is supposed to have been built as Iupiter Temple during the Roman Period.
