Fantasy Canyon, Utah, USA
Utah

Fantasy Canyon is an erosion feature set in an ancient lake bed in the Uinta Basin.  During the formation of the Rocky Mountains 40 to 50 million years ago, broad lake basins appeared between the uplifting mountains.  One of those basins, Lake Uinta, collected sand, silt and clay carried by rivers from the Uinta mountains to the north.

With pressure and time, that material became sandstone and shale.  The erosion of the softer shale produced the very fine features observed in this little canyon.

Driving to the site, you will see another feature associated with the soft shale deposits: numerous oil and natural gas wells.  Viewed from the air, the desert is checkered with hundreds of these wells.
