On top of the terminal Moraine Standing on this pile of loose rock left behind by the glacier gives a rather different viewpoint to the glacier. Looking down towards the base, yet still with the flatter area hundreds of feet above, there is a lot of ice left in this glacier. About 30 metres of snow falls at the top of the glacier each year, compressing down and preserving the glacier. Were it not for the special conditions here- westerly coast off the southern ocean, mountains behind forcing the huge rainfall, the glaciers would now be a thing of the past. http://www.360cities.net/image/franzjosef3
