Hook Lighthouse, County Wexford
Ireland

Hook Lighthouse is one of the 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland.

The site at the entrance to Waterford Harbour has had a beacon since the 5th century and Hook Lighthouse remains the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. Thanks to its four-metre thick walls it has stood at the rocky southern tip of the Hook peninsula, subject to the full force of the Atlantic, since the mid 13th century.

It was built in the Norman Round Tower style by William Marshall, Earl of Pembroke. The light was tended by monks from a nearby monastery. A new lantern house was added in the late 18th century. Operated today by the Commissioners of Irish Lights it was fully automated in 1996 and is now a popular tourist attraction.
