Lockheed Hudson Mk III at MOTAT NZ
New Zealand

Developed from the Lockheed 14 Super Electra transport, the Hudson was an important costal and maritime reconnaissance aircraft for New Zealand in the ealry years of World War II.

In late 1940, the Hudson was acquired by the New Zealand government as a counter measure to the German raiders then operating in the South Pacific. The need to respond to the German threat had become critical following the sinking of several ships in New Zealand waters and other off the coast of Nauru.

Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour, reconnaissance and anti-submarine operations expanded to Espiritu Santu, New Caledonia, and later Guadalcanal. The RNZAF Hudson squadrons performed the majority of the maritime patrols, until the aircraft was replaced by Lockheed Venturas. Hudsons were redeployed for training and transport.

NZ2031 was initially based in New Zealand, but later operated out of Espiritu Santo with No. 3 Squadron. During this time Group Captain Geoffry Robert used NZ 2031 as his personal transport. The aircraft carried high ranking officers vetween RNZAF bases in the Pacific until the end of the war.
