Fossilienfundstelle Grube Messel
Die Grube ist ein stillgelegtes Bergwerk im Raum Darmstadt Dieburg, in dem in Tagebau Ölschiefer abgebaut wurde. Dabei stieß man auf wertvolle Fossilien aus dem Eozän. Darunter waren auch zwei Exemplare einer ausgestorbenen Säugetiergattung, die im weitesten Sinne mit den Pferden verwandt waren. Sie lebten vor 50 bis 41 Millionen Jahren. Beinahe wären all diese Schätze unwiederbringlich verloren gegangen, denn ein paar Politiker wollten die Grube unbedingt zur Müllkippe machen.
