Powerscourt House was built as a castle in the 13th century. It underwent major alterations in the 18th century into Palladian style. It was nearly destroyed by a fire in 1974. It was not renovated until 1996. The 19th century gardens are a major tourist attraction. The estate is located to the northern west of the Wicklow Montains, just 20 km south of Dublin.
