Schloss Lutetsburg
Germany

Historical overview of Lütetsburg castle

THE MOATED CASTLE THROUGH CHANGES IN TIME

The construction of the original castle dates back to the East Frisian chieftain Lütet Manninga. He lost his ancestral home in Westel in the Ley bay between 1373-77 as a result of devastating storm tides. Consequently he converted the family property "Uthoff" into the moated castle "Lützborch".

In the year 1588 the moated castle became the property of Reichsfreiherr Wilhelm von Inn- und Knyphausen of the Jeverland, through his marriage to Hyma Manninga. Further prominent lords of the castle and representatives of the Knyphausen dynasty followed, e.g. Dodo zu Innhausen und Knyphausen (1583-1636), who fought the thirty year’s war in the service of the Swedish King Gustav Adolf, and Wilhelm von Knyphausen, who in 1776 fought with the British against George Washington in America.
The castle itself experienced many changes in its long history: theft and depredation during the Saxonian feud in 1517, ravages during the thirty year war, destruction following a fire in the year 1893 and finally partial destruction by aircraft bombs in the second World War.

THE CASTLE TODAY

The Lütetsburg castle today is a new construction that was built on the foundation walls in 1517 in the modern style. The  four-wing construction was built in the years 1956 to 1962 and is today the residence of the family zu Inn- und Knyphausen.

The simple, monumental brick building was designed by Fürst (German title translating to Prince) Wilhelm Edzard zu Inn- und Knyphausen and implemented by the architect Hans Heinrich von Oppeln.

The construction blends in well with the countryside and is consistent with the impressive park that surrounds it. A guided tour of the privately inhabited castle is however not possible.

More About Germany

Germany? Before the beginning there was Ginnungagap, an empty space of nothingness, filled with pure creative power. (Sort of like the inside of my head.)And it ends with Ragnarok, the twilight of the Gods. In between is much fighting, betrayal and romance. Just as a good Godly story should be.Heroes have their own graveyard called Valhalla. Unfortunately we cannot show you a panorama of it at this time, nor of the lovely Valkyries who are its escort service.Hail Odin, wandering God wielding wisdom and wand! Hail Freya, hail Tyr, hail Thor!Odin made the many lakes and the fish in them. In his traverses across the lands he caused there to be the Mulheim Bridge in Cologne, as did he make the Mercury fountain, Mercury being of his nature. But it is to the mighty Thor that the Hammering Man gives service.Between the time of the Nordic old ones and that of modern Frankfort there may have been a T.Rex or two on the scene. At least some mastodons for sure came through for lunch, then fell into tar pits to become fossils for us to find. And there we must leave you, O my most pure and holy children.Text by Steve Smith.
