The Afsluitdijk (the Big Dam) was finished in 1932 to protect the Dutch lands, mainly below sea level, from the frequent floods.

The dam is 30 km long, 90 meters large and divides the North Sea from the IJsselmeer (which was once the Zuiderzee - the South Sea - now a lake).
