Waiting for a Procession during Holy Week in Angitua, Guatemala
Guatemala

Holy Week (Semana Santa) is the biggest festival of the year in Antigua, Guatemala. The events culminate in Good Friday (Viernes Santo) when families and communities work together for hours and hours to make sawdust carpets (alfombras) like the one pictured above. However, the life of these carpets is short-lived; once the procession walks over, it is destroyed forever. Hundreds of people participate in the processions - from boys carrying banners to men shouldering the weight of huge floats. The event takes over the whole town.
