Bald Peak Vista
USA
Standing atop Bald Peak at an elevation of 8633 ft / 2631 m the views seem like they are forever. The panorama opens looking towards the SSW (~210 degrees). The heavily wooded prominence below the horizon is Dead Indian Hill also at about 8,600'. Dead Indian Hill is the location where Chief Joeseph of the Nez Perce exited the steep Clark's Fork Canyon to continue the elusive retreat from the U.S. Army in 1877. The highway over Dead Indian Hill is named in his honor as the Chief Joseph Highway. Behind Dead Indian Hill are four snowy summits from left to right. Only the second and fourth are named, respectively, Trout Peak and Dead Indian Peak (as opposed to the similarly named Dead Indian Hill in the foreground). The peaks are on a long ridge in the Wyoming Absaroka Range. Rotate your view to the left to see the large open park right in front of you called Bald Ridge. Behind Bald Ridge is the long, low mountain named Pat O'Hara. Rotate more to the left to see the distinctive shape of Wyoming's famous Heart Mountain. The highway between Pat O'Hara and Heart Mountain leads to Cody, Wyoming just a few short miles away. Now, swing around to due west across the deep chasm of the Clark's Fork River Canyon. The Clark's Fork River can be seen 4,000'down in the canyon below. The mountains across the canyon are also a part of the Beartooth/Absaroka mountain range of Montana/Wyoming. In this view the plateau rises to about 9,900' elevation. Finally, rotate to nearly north to see the north end of the Beartooth Mountains not far from Red Lodge, MT. The long, high, flat mountain to the north that can be seen is the Line Creek Plateau rising to about 9,600'.

More About USA

The United States is one of the most diverse countries on earth, jam packed full of amazing sights from St. Patrick's cathedral in New York to Mount Hollywood California. The Northeast region is where it all started. Thirteen British colonies fought the American Revolution from here and won their independence in the first successful colonial rebellion in history. Take a look at these rolling hills carpeted with foliage along the Hudson river here, north of New York City. The American south is known for its polite people and slow pace of life. Probably they move slowly because it's so hot. Southerners tend not to trust people from "up north" because they talk too fast. Here's a cemetery in Georgia where you can find graves of soldiers from the Civil War.The West Coast is sort of like another country that exists to make the east coast jealous. California is full of nothing but grizzly old miners digging for gold, a few gangster rappers, and then actors. That is to say, the West Coast functions as the imagination of the US, like a weird little brother who teases everybody then gets famous for making freaky art.The central part of the country is flat farmland all the way over to the Rocky Mountains. Up in the northwest corner you can find creative people in places like Portland and Seattle, along with awesome snowboarding and good beer. Text by Steve Smith.
