East Sand Crack Petroglyphs
Arizona
Ancient petroglyphs, as well as a far distant view into House Rock Valley and the Kaibab Plateau are the reward to the hiker for ascending the East Sand Crack route up the Vermilion cliffs. The petroglyphs are carved (pecked) into the hard "varnish" of the sandstone. Softer sandstone would erode to fast and petroglyphs would soon fade away.
