Holy Trinity Church in Grocka
Spiritual Treasury Box

Grocka The settlement was first mentioned in writing until the fourth century, the list of Bulgarian bishops of 878 under the name Gardec, although the first and oldest traces of settlement in this area dating from the early Neolithic (New Stone Age), and were found in Vinca. It is known to be located on the banks of the Danube the largest Neolithic settlement in this part of Europe, which belong to the period and locations Agino hill Dubočaj in Grocka.

Grocka Territory in the ancient period was an integral part of the Roman province of Upper Mizija. Vinca settlements, Ritopek, Grocka and Restovik are made on the route of a Roman road that linked Singidunum (Belgrade) and Viminacium (Kostolac).

The following written document that provides evidence of the rich history of this settlement is a Turkish census from the 1560th year, where we see that in addition to the town which has two quarters, with 11 Muslim and Christian with 28 homes, and mentions a town that has dizdars and about 40 soldiers. Evliya Celebi in his Travelogue Grocka described as a square fortress, in which are stored ammunition dumps, grain store, a mosque and two small hana.

At a later stage, the 1717th Grocka year fell under Austrian rule, and in the immediate vicinity of the decisive battle took place between the Austrians and the Turks, after which the Turks conquered Belgrade. From this time we have left a multitude of documents and objects, and one of the most important monuments is certainly a monastery in Rajinovac Begaljica, in whose courtyard is the tomb of Prince Elias Andrejevića Palalije.

We have no reliable data on the existence of church buildings in the territory of the Middle Ages. Although the earliest descriptions of Grocka no mention of the church, we could assume that the mosques mentioned in the travel notes, built on the ruins of the Orthodox places of worship, as is happening in many Serbian towns conquered by the Turks. In support of this is the fact that already the first decades of the eighteenth century, mentions the "old church" built of solid material.
The first reliable information is revealed in the list of churches from Belgrade arhidijaceze 1732nd year, detailing where the two churches in Grocka with many moving objects.

OLD AND ABOVE THE CHURCH

The old church was located in the lower part of town, "the mahala, a small, old, osveščaja" with "duharima of adobe covered cigloju". Details are listed liturgical items, vestments, liturgical books of the old "Gospel bound in silver - Serbian press, the second manuscript Gospel, the Liturgy printed in Moscow, Moscow Apostle, Proceedings Serbian, Serbian Psalter old." Of objects of applied art are given gold works of art, objects made of various metals and church vestments and fabrics.

We know that the iconostasis included 31 icon: the icon of Christ 9, Bogorodičinih 3, 6 archangel, vol. Jovan 3 Baptist, Saint. Nicholas 4, the two icons of St.. And St. George. Stefan and an icon of St.. Bartholomew the Apostle and St.. Demetrius.

The upper church was formerly an old Turkish mosque, which served as places of worship unsanctified with the permission of Metropolitan Moses Petrovic. Located on the western part of town, near the present church. And the church had an old liturgical books: Serbian manuscript Gospel, Liturgy Moscow, Triod farisejevac, Oktoih Kiev, old Serbian Proceedings, Obšćak Moscow, Prologue four to twelve months, an old manuscript Psalter, et al. The church was furnished with various objects in the field of applied art made in sreru, copper, iron, wood, and rich ecclesiastical vestments.

The list says 25 icons that adorned the church: Christ icons 8, the two icons of St.. Nicholas, Saint. George, vol. Demetrius, vol. Judith, one of icons of St.. John the Baptist, Saint. Elias, Vol. John the Theologian, St. Cosmas and Damian, Saint. Luke, two icons "12mesjaci" banner with the icon of Christ and the Virgin.

Both churches are shown on the plan Grocka from the 1739th was kept in the Vienna war archive. It is interesting that in addition to their church and the third appears, which is located south of the quarter, on the right bank Gročice. About her monster other data.

It is likely that both churches were destroyed in the tumultuous events of our history in late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. Joakim Vujic in his travels to the Serbiji, during which it visited 1823.godine Grocka, states that "in this town Foundling is a poor church, which is made of wood and wattle and almost destroyed." In addition, mentions the school with 22 students that was in the churchyard.

NEW CHURCH BUILDING

Over time, there was a need that instead of this old, almost dilapidated church, build a new temple, so they are asking this Gročani 1828th was addressed to Prince Milos. In the same year began the building of new churches. In August, the building of the arch occurred when the spring came less due to lack of material. This was soon overcome and the church was completed in time, we see from the letter to Prince Milos Gročana from the 1828th year. With the letter is attached and specifications for the construction costs.

Above proscomidion đakonika rise and two polygonal dome. The overall architectural structure of the church, and the facade, is based on the classicist conception of the elements of Romanticism.

The iconostasis was also conceived in the spirit of classicism.
