The Lady Bird Johnson Grove is a redwood grove located in Redwood National & State Parks near Orick, California. This site is a short walk off the Bald Hill Scenic Drive & marks where President Nixon dedicated this grove to President Johnson's wife, Lady Bird Johnson on August 27, 1969. A year earlier, Redwood National Park had been created by President Johnson for the protection of these trees, of which many countless acres of old-growth redwoods had been logged in the past. The plaque reads:
Lady Bird Johnson Grove
Dedicated in honor of Mrs. Johnson by Richard Nixon
President of the United States
August 27, 1969
In recognition of her devoted service to the cause of preserving and enhancing America's natural beauty for the enjoyment of all the people
"One of my most unforgettable memories of the past years is walking through the Redwoods last November - seeing the lovely shafts of light filtering through the trees so far above, feeling the majesty and silence of that forest, and watching a salmon rise in one of those swift streams - all our problems seemed to fall into perspective and I think every one of us walked out more serene and happier."
