Rough Castle Roman fort is the best preserved of 19 forts along the Antonine Wall. Named after the Emperor Antoninus Pius, the defensive line was built across Scotland’s central belt in 142 AD and marked the most north-westerly frontier of the former Roman Empire.
The series of pits dug into the ground are known as Lilia. They were set with sharpened stakes inside and camouflaged with leaves and twigs, ready to catch out any unwary attacker.
