National Palace of Pena, Sintra, Terrace of Triton
Portugal

The Terrace of the Triton opens to the landscape to the east, while it is delimited to the west by the New Palace. To the north side is the Old Convent, behind two galleries with outdated canopial arches built in the 19th century. The Palácio Novo has on the ground floor two vaulted passages (tunnels) that allowed the carriages to go around the Pátio dos Arcos, to the west, and return through the tunnel. From the terrace of the Triton, Cruz Alta can be seen to the south on the highest point of the Serra de Sintra (528m above the sea), as well as the statue of the Knight in the distance in the Park. This was possibly conceived as a scenic element that contributes to the intended “medieval” environment in this “Castelo da Pena”.
