Ulaanbaatar

The National University of Mongolia is the country’s oldest and only comprehensive university and a leading center of sciences, education and culture. It was established on October 5, 1942 in the capital city Ulaanbaatar with three faculties: Pedagogical, Medical and Veterinary Sciences. During the inception period of its history and hardship of the Second World War, the former Soviet Union had provided a degree of assistance, including sending qualified experts and academics and supply of training materials and equipment. The NUM has played a significant role in the development of the higher education in Mongolia.

In 1958, the Veterinary Faculty separated from the University to become the Agricultural University. In 1961, the Medical Faculty became the Medical University. The Technical University and the University of Humanities became independent universities in 1982. After sixty years of dynamic growth, the University has become a place of sustained innovation, a blend of scholarship and practical realism. The NUM has educated generations of professional people in various fields and its graduates make one third of the country’s intellectuals. It has twelve schools and faculties in Ulaanbaatar and campuses in Zavkhan and Orkhon provinces. The last ten years have been a period of reforms in the structure, financing, and governance of Mongolian educational institutions.

The NUM has been continuously adjusting its operations and curricula to deal with new economic conditions, changing labour market demands and altered social aspirations. As other comprehensive universities in the world, the NUM offers a broad range of bachelor, Master and PhD programmes. It is distinguished by the number of fundamental and applied advanced research and intellectual products produced and applied to industry and business.
