Opunohu - Marae Tetiroa
Moorea

The marae has a surrounding wall of basalt 40 feet long and 17 meters wide, stone blocks together. Overlooking the inner courtyard is partially paved and contains 15 stones, 2 stones records and 3 rectangular cists. There is a strange atmosphere generated by the timber * mape on this site. The ahu, with a height of about 50 cm, separated from the wall was lined in the upper plate coral, typical of marae from the inside of the Windward Islands.

Under one of the walls of the marae, some remains of an ancient village, including holes and poles residential traces of furnaces and food pits were found. This suggests an occupation of the site towards the end of the sixteenth century. The restoration of the site has also unearthed two skeletons incomplete human angle in a wall. Other relics give an indication of the time of construction of the marae in the eighteenth century.

More About Moorea

Moorea is a high island in French Polynesia, part of the Society Islands, 17 km (roughly 9mi) northwest of Tahiti. Moorea means "yellow lizard" in Tahitian. An older name for the island is Aimeho, sometimes spelled Aimeo or Eimeo (among other spellings misunderstood by early visitors with no knowledge of the language). Early Western colonists and voyagers also referred to Moorea as York Island.
