The Il Rivellino theatre building, formerly Tuscania's mayor residence, tribunal and jail, dates back to XIII century and, heavily reworked, was turned into a theatre in XVIII century, at the expense of discontinuing a horse racing competition that was very popular among the Tuscanese people. The ancient building, after surviving World War II, and being used as a cinema, crumbled down, was rebuilt, suffered extensive damages from an earthquake, and finally reopened in 1998.
