China Camp State Park
The Bay Area

A view of the fishing village at China Camp State Park near San Rafael, California.  The village started around 1880 w/ a population of 500 Chinese-Americans who originated from Canton, China.  They had operated a shrimp business to be netted & shipped back to China & other Chinese communites in the US.  Following the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act there was a growing animosity towards the Chinese felt throughout San Francisco that many had left & settled here, to which the village once peaked at 10,000 people.  Today most of the buildings are gone however these few remain, as well as this dock & replicated boats.  There is a small museum & the entire area is set aside as a state park w/ many hiking trails.
