Richmond Bridge 2
Tasmania

On Australia’s National Heritage list since 2005, the Richmond Bridge was constructed from local sandstone between 1823 and 1825 using forced labor by convicts. Its completion facilitated the settlement of the east coast and Tasman Peninsula.

Today the bridge and surrounding area attract about 200,000 visitors annually. As Australia’s oldest large stone arch bridge, it is considered an important part of Tasmania’s convict heritage. The bridge spans the Coal River and is presently used by highway C351, locally called Wellington Street.
