Te Matau a Pohe Arrival of the Waka
Northland

Te Matau a Pohe-Whangarei's new Bridge

Symbolism plays such a strong part of Maori culture, and the Waka served a traditional role in the same way that roads now do for us. So the three Waka passing under the bridge and gathering on the other side can be taken as a meeting of both old and new.

THey were the first of the floating craft to come, just as they were the means of bringing the first settlers to the area.

More About Northland

Auckland is the commercial capital of New Zealand but anything to the North can be considered "Northland". Preferred destination for tourists and workers alike when surf, sand, diving and fishing is involved. It has a solid rural base of Dary, Beef and Sheep as well as horticulture and wineyards. Whangarei is the regional city on the way up to Cape Reinga at the northernmost tip of the island.
