A 200' aerial view overlooking downtown Tonopah, Nevada. With a population of about 2,478 during the 2010 census, the town is situated roughly halfway between Reno and Las Vegas. Like many places in Nevada, the silver discovery in the nearby hills led to the start of the town with it being found in the year 1900. The town was once called Butler City after the founder Jim Butler, however the name Tonopah stuck, being of Shoshoni origin supposedly meaning "hidden spring".
