Villanueva de la Serena
Extremadura

Villanueva de la Serena is a municipality and a Spanish city, belonging to the province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura. 

Situation 

Located in the region of Vegas Altas, Puerto de la comarca de La Serena (and historically belongs to it) and just 5 km from the nearby Don Benito, has led it along with a relevant urban nuevaaglomeración throughout the region with a population of about 60,000 inhabitants, forming an agricultural, industrial and service with a great influence both at local and regional levels. It is head and judicial Party headquarters in Villanueva de la Serena. 

The Natural Way Las Vegas del Guadiana (Vía Verde de las Vegas del Guadiana and Villuercas) part of this city. 

Population 

The village of Villanueva de la Serena is 26 102 inhabitants (the Municipal January 1, 2010), distributed between the core and its three local entities Minor. 

Economy 

The economy of Villanueva de la Serena has been traditionally based on the exploitation of sheep. The sheep and goats from La Serena had known for centuries throughout the country and was famous cattle fair, which since medieval times, bound at Villanueva de la Serena, near Zafra and Medina del Campo, as important places for trade cattle. It is celebrated annually on 28, 29 and May 30 devoted mainly to sheep which was concentrated in an area called "The Limerick" immediate Zújar river. 

Villanueva was always an industrious city that made everything from soap to chocolate, or tanks to produce wines in very different regions, and bells rang in the most unexpected cast in Villanueva, which exported grapes even abroad, or who imposed his mastery in artistic locksmith. They are famous for the "Roman" or scales for weighing, which since Roman times the settlement were made by hand in these lands. It is still possible to find a craftsman to the factory. 

Villanueva Currently, besides the livestock is still very active, has an important agricultural activity. In 1952, the Plan Badajoz went on to become head of the Vegas del Guadiana and rich but dry land transformed into gardens where they grow maize, rice, all kinds of fruit trees. It is also head of shops and services for the entire region.
