The historical gates of the old town in Zuoying was the first stoned castle of Taiwan built in 1825 (the 5th Year of Qing Emperor Daoguang).During the ruling periods of Qing Dynasty, the map of the old Fongshan town covered Kaohsiung and Pingtung regions of the present day.In Zuoying District today, the remained historical sites include the northern, the eastern and the southern gates and some parts of the gate walls, which are well reserved and now classified as first-class historical sites of Taiwan.

West Gate (Dianhai Gate): Located in Zihjhu New Village in Zuoying with only a wall section of 100 meters or so remained.The stone inscription written “West Gate” is now displayed in the Former British Consulate.

East Gate (Fongyi Gate): Mostly maintained with a wall of 500 meters or so connecting Yung-Ching Elementary School to the right and Haiguang New Village to the left.There are crenellations left on many parts of the castle and now restored completely.

South Gate (Ciwun Gate): Situated at the intersection of Zuoying Road and Gushan 3rd Road, right in the major traffic location.The words of “Ciwun Gate” engraved on the gate tablet are maintained perfectly still, like the original piece.The tower of the South Gate was built in 1969 (the 58th year of the Republic of China).

North Gate (Gongchen Gate): Located at the intersection of Shengli Road, Yimin Lane and Bizihtou Street.The structure of the gate can be considered as well maintained with gate walls of 100 meters or so remained along both sides.The stone inscription on the gate is written “Gongchen Gate”, and fine quality clay sculptures of door gods have been embedded on each side of the gate, which are most rarely seen in Taiwan.
