吉林省图书馆的前身成立于清宣统元年（公元1909年），设在当时的吉林府所在地吉林市，历经民国、伪满时期。新中国成立后，吉林省省会于1954年迁到长春市，1957年在长春市筹建新馆。1958年新馆馆舍竣工，经省政府批准命名为吉林省图书馆，并进行机构设置和编制确定。1960年吉林省图书馆正式开馆。吉林省图书馆是吉林省物质文明和精神文明建设的重要窗口，它以崭新的姿态，以多角度、全方位的方式为广大读者提供高质量、高水平的信息服务，是社会公众学习的理想场所，是公民的终身学校。
