44N08 - Antelope Fire aftermath
California

The Antelope Fire began from a lightning strike on August 1, 2021 south of Tennant, California & lasted to October 15, 2021, burning a total of 145,632 acres.  It was one of many large-scale fires brought on by an ongoing drought to the region.  It was nearly contained in September when abrupt extreme fire activity & winds broke fire lines & sent it northwards nearly 15 miles to Sheepy Ridge, nearly doubling it in size.  The fire tore through the west half of Lava Beds National Monument, greatly altering the landscape (the previous year, the Caldwell Fire burned the east side of the monument).  The Antelope Fire heavily burned through one of my favorite areas to explore from east to west.  This view is off road 44N08 near Tamarack Flat w/ vegetation slowly coming back a year later.  It is actually a pretty sight with the fall lighting.  Usually such areas are very still in sound however there is a crackling, almost munching sound made by an unknown insect that I've often heard in recently burned areas.
