Canyon De Chelly National Monument's deep canyon protects it from the desert climate which exists above the cliffs. The small stream in the bottom of the canyon provides just enough water to irrigate fields for the Navajo (Dine') people who still live within the canyon in a unique agreement allowing them to live with the national monument on their native lands, while others can visit and view their culture and cultural lands.
