Belmonte, Church of Santiago, aerial view
Portugal

Crowned by the medieval castle, Vila de Belmonte stands out for the beauty of its landscapes and monuments. It was through Belmonte that the old Roman road that connected Mérida and Braga passed. Here are vestiges of that time, of which Villa da Quinta da Fúmea and Centum Cellas stand out, places linked to agricultural exploitation. Sancho I grants him a charter in 1199 for his development and repopulation, later D. Afonso III authorizes the Bishop D.Egas Fafes building a Tower in Belmonte. D. Afonso V donates the castle to Fernão Cabral I, making it the residence of the Cabral family. Of the family stands out the figure of Pedro Alvares Cabral, Discoverer of Brazil.

The Santiago Chapel is a Romanesque monument that has undergone changes over time, with Gothic and Mannerist elements. The front of this church dates from the 18th century. Inside the church, you can see a chapel, built in 1240, by D. Maria Gil and a 14th century Pietá, which, according to José Saramago, is the most admirable piece of this church. On the opposite side, it is possible to observe frescoes, from at least two seasons. In the chancel there are traces of a triptych made up of figures representing Our Lady, S. Tiago (orago) and S. Pedro (which many say is a representation of Pedro Alvares Cabral).
