Gigapixel view from atop Boundary Peak (elev. 13,143') in the White Mountains, marking the highest point in Nevada.  The peak is actually a sub-summit of the higher Montgomery Peak which is just across in California.  Here one can see tremendous views of the basin & range country.  Nearby lower ranges include the Candelaria Hills, Volcanic Hills, & of course to the west the expansive snowy Sierra Nevada.  Queen Valley lies below & in the distant northeast one can see the Columbus Salt Marsh.  The gullies at treeline below house bristlecone pines, in fact some of the oldest organisms in the world are found within this mountain range.  The summit boulder was fairly flat & had what looked like inclusions of magnetite or another iron mineral.  Tons of red ladybugs adorned the summit boulders & you can see a few gray-crowned rosy finches (visible in the large snowpatch) pecking away at frozen insects.  I hadn't seen those birds since Colorado as they live at high elevations.  Here & particularly the Sierra Nevada, thunderstorms develop fast.  I was actually out of shape for not being at such high altitude in awhile, & having had to park relatively low not having a 4wd vehicle, I decided to forego nearby Montgomery Peak, about half mile distant.
