The Boise Old Penitentiary Steamhouse was constructed in 1951, and provided heat via steam for the prison until it was shut down in 1973. It housed 5 large boilers that were mounted on the concrete slabs seen on the floor. These boilers were powered by coal, which was stored in the sheds seen on the North facing wall, and the steam was pumped to the prison via a series of underground ducts.

There is some ambiguity as to where the name "Idaho" came from, but it is generally believed to have simply been made up by George M. Willing. There is a possibility it was derived from a Native American phrase. Idaho is very mountainous and is a popular outing destination of the outdoorsman.
