Kaningos Square is located in downtown Athens and it is one of the busiest in the city. Here is the Ministry of Commerce, the building of the 7th Art and it is a starting point for several bus lines.
The Square is a large triangular open space cleaved by a major city street, known as Academy Street.
It was named (Πλατεία Κάνιγγος, Plateía Káningos, Canning Square) after Anglo philhellene George Canning (1770-1827) in appreciation of his supportive stance toward the Greek War of Independence (1821–1830).
Kaningos Square has many shops, cafes and stores selling a variety of products; from clothing, footwear, electronic parts, and true Greek items such as locally grown and packaged pistachio nuts and dried fruits.
