The master plan for this project is intended to be a clear and bold diagram so that the layout is easily understood. Projects that include exhibition and convention facilities require this clarity considering the multitude of visitors they receive. The concept for the scheme is also driven by environmental initiatives to ensure that the scheme makes a significant contribution to the discourse of designing such developments. A significant component of the master plan is the treatment of the roof above the exhibition and convention facilities. The intent is to not only create and efficient roof but more importantly to create a building form that sits in the public open space as a new part of the urban fabric of the city.
The exhibition halls have been designed in a modular format and are therefore easily added as the demand requires it. In the first phase of the development the proposal is to develop the required halls amounting to 18,000m2 of internal hall space for exhibitions. The adjoining site should be reserved for future expansion of the site and in the interim could be developed as open parking and should allow for the occasional introduction of temporary tent structures as maybe required to include events larger than the facility can accommodate. The first phase fits on the site but successful facilities around the world double in size the first ten years and the expending building must be contiguous for maximum success of the facility. Finally for the ultimate expansion in twenty years time the facility could reclaim land from the harbour.
